New DWQ CD set
A set of two archival CD’s entitled "Dorian Wind Quintet Retrospectacular" has recently been released by Summit Records. It features live performances by the DQW spanning the years from its formation in 1961 with the founding members to a performance of "The Anniversary Variations" by five different composers (Bennett, Perle, Childs, Adolphe, and Hoiby) with the current members. The selections on this archival CD include various personnel configurations over the years and represent a cross section of the music the group has performed – standard repertoire, commissioned and newer works, and transcriptions. Many performances are taken from a large collection of reel-to-reel and cassette tapes which were transferred to digital format. To purchase, click here.
New Commission
We are pleased to announce that, through a grant from Chamber Music America, we have commissioned David Del Tredici to write a wind quintet for the DQW. Generally recognized as the father of the Neo-Romantic movement in music, Del Tredici has received numerous awards (including the Pulitzer Prize) and has been commissioned and performed by nearly every major American and European orchestral ensemble. "Del Tredici," said Aaron Copland, "is that rare find among composers – a creator with a truly original gift. I know of no other composer of his generation who composes music of greater freshness and daring, or with more personality." Over the past several years, he has ventured into the realm of chamber music with String Quartet No. 1, Grand Trio and a large number of solo-piano works. We look forward to receiving, learning, and playing his wind quintet. This surely will be a wonderful addition to the wind quintet repertoire. Any help towards this commission would be truly appreciated.
Dorian Wind Quintet’s New Members
The Dorian Wind Quintet is pleased to welcome two new members, bassoonist John Hunt and hornist Karl Kramer-Johanson. Their biographies can be viewed under “Member Profiles.”
DWQ Awarded Chamber Music America Residency Grant
We are pleased to announce that the Dorian Wind Quintet was awarded a $12,000 matching grant for a residency in New Mexico. The quintet will have out-reach activities and concerts at the Taos Pueblo and in Taos, the Santa Fe Indian School, the United World College, and the University of New Mexico in January 2006.
The Obituary of Ethan Bauch
With great sadness, the Dorian Wind Quintet announces the death of its
bassoonist, Ethan Bauch, of lymphoma on Saturday, November 12, 2005. Ethan was
a person with tremendous talents, strong opinions and wry wit. He will be
greatly missed. Our sympathies go out to his family, particularly to his wife,
Toko, who never missed a concert. Donations in Ethan's memory may be made to
the Stem Cell Research Foundation, Development Department, 22512 Gateway Center
Drive, Clarkesburg, MD 20871, or to the Dorian Woodwind Quintet Foundation, POB
230658, New York, NY 10023.
NEW Historical Archives Available!
Now in its 44th season, the Dorian Quintet has a rich history of performance and education. As part of the
group's upcoming Archival Project, we have compiled some historical data and made it available here on
the DWQ website. Just click the "Group History" button on the navigation bar at the left, and find out what's been
going on with the Dorian Quintet for the last half-century.
Two New DWQ Recordings
The Dorian Wind Quintet can be heard on two new recordings. The first, Trilogy, features works of Daniel Asia, including his Woodwind Quintet (1998), a Dorian commission. This CD can be purchased here. Master Play--The Sunday Sessions is a collection featuring guests on Minnesota Public Radio's St. Paul Sunday program. DWQ is represented in the Finale of Antonin Reicha's Quintet in Eb, Opus 88 No.2. To purchase, click here.
DWQ Awarded NEA Grant
We are pleased to announce that the Dorian Wind Quintet has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This grant was presented under the Heritage and Preservation category of funding and will help offset costs of our planned archival recording covering the group's history.
The compilation CD will include photos, anecdotes and the best recorded
performances of the Dorian Wind Quintet throughout its history,
culminating with the Anniversary Variations on a Theme of Reicha.
This will serve as a companion piece to Jerry Kirkbride's recent
project documenting the history of the Quintet. Click here to read more
about Jerry's project in an article by James Keller, appearing in the 2005 Chamber Music America Directory (requires Acrobat Reader).
The National Endowment for the Arts requires a dollar-for-dollar match on this grant, so your contributions are needed and most welcome. Thank you!
